wonderful power of mantra jap/chanting

It is well known fact that, Different sounds have different effects on human psyche. If a soft sound of wind rustling through leaves soothes our nerves, the musical note of running stream enchants our heart, thunders may cause awe and fear.
Respected Swami Shivananda says, "here is shakti in every word. If someone suddenly shouts “Snake! Snake!” you at once jump in fright. If someone calls you a donkey, you are annoyed and show anger. If you think of hot samosas and chutney, you will start to salivate. When such is the power of the names of the ordinary things of the world, what tremendous power there should be in the names of God.
Repeating a mantra is known as japa. Japa is an important part of yoga. It is spiritual food for the hungry soul. It is a rod in the hands of the blind. In Kali yuga, japa is the easiest, quickest, safest and surest way to reach God and attain immortality and perennial joy. Japa purifies the heart and steadies the mind. It scorches samskaras and induces vairagya, or non-attachment. Japa roots out desires and makes one fearless. It removes delusion and gives supreme peace. Japa gives health, wealth, strength and long life. It gives an exhilarating, refreshing bath and washes wonderfully the subtle body or astral body".
As said by Jonathan Goldman, a writer, musician and teacher. He is an authority on sound healing and a pioneer in the field of harmonics.
"Some believe that the recitation of sacred mantras actually causes the physical and etheric bodies to change their vibrational frequency level-becoming more attuned if you like, with divine energy. Thus, when one chants a mantra for an extended period of time, to invoke, for example some deity, the higher energies of that deity will encode itself upon the chanter. This is one purpose for much mantric chanting—to become one and unite with the energy of the deity that one is chanting for. If the person has some sickness or imbalance, this imbalance can frequently be released by having the energy of the deity encode itself upon the person. This actually comes from the concept of vibrational (as opposed to allopathic) medicine, which is the basis of many healing modality, including homeopathy and acupuncture—that all the universe including our bodies, is simply made of vibration—a concept, incidentally, that the new Superstring theory of physics supports. Everything is in a state of vibration and when we are in a natural, resonant vibration, we are in a state of health. But if some part of the body begins to vibrate at a counter frequency, the energy becomes stuck and disease sets in. Therefore, by mantric chanting, one can cause stuck energy to become released, and we can return to our natural state of resonance, effecting a cure."

Mantras are Sanskrit-invocations of the Supreme Being. Reinforced and propelled by japa meditation, they pass from the verbal level through the mental and telepathic states, and on to pure thought energy. Of all languages, Sanskrit most closely approaches telepathic language because of its affinity to the fifty primeval sounds. It is the most direct way to approach the transcendental state.

Mantras cannot be concocted or tailor-made for the individual, despite some current claims. They have always existed in a latent state as sound energies. Just as gravity was discovered but not invented by Newton, Mantras were revealed to the ancient masters. They have been codified in the scriptures and handed down from guru to disciple. Although it is customary for the guru when giving initiation to accept voluntary offerings of fruit, flowers or money, the selling of Mantras is strictly against all spiritual rules.

Neither Mantra, deity nor guru, once chosen, should be changed. There are many paths up the mountain. Perseverance on one alone will bring the aspirant to the top faster than if he were to spread his energies in exploring all the alternative paths.

The science of Mantra is very complex. There are even Mantras for such specific purposes as curing snake bite and chronic disease, but these are of a lower order. In the modern world, the power of gross sound vibration is just beginning to be utilized in physical therapy, and its potential is being tapped in other fields. The ancient Indian sages had this sophistication thousands of years ago. They have used sound in its gross and subtle states to penetrate the planes of human consciousness and to reach the divine vibration that is the experience of God. Beginning in OM and dissolving in OM, the Mantra comes full cycle.

  1. Really Informative. Thanks for posting. According to me, Mantra recitation is considered to be the mother of meditation. With the recitation of a mantra, the mind promptly concentrates on a solitary thought expediting transcendence. By presenting the mantra, smooth meditation is upgraded even while doing ordinary tasks.

Through mantras, one can truly experience it to be an extension of mantras and simultaneously aids us reach the state of euphoria. But one can't simply practice mantra by reading it out of a book. It is advisable to learn the art of mantra chanting with the guidance of a guru as they will be able to help us understand better the most correct way to recite.
